So you are smart enough to practice safe sex (preventing both pregnancy and STDs) by properly using a condom. But what do you do with the condom when you are done with it? Here are some hints on environmentally-friendly condom disposal.

Firstly, don’t flush your condoms, ever! Flushing condoms is not the way to deal with them. Condoms can clog the plumbing in your house (or the plumbing wherever you happen to be). This can be an expensive and embarrassing situation. If the condom manages to make it through your septic system, it will only end up with the solid waste. This means that somebody has to pull it out of the sewage treatment, which isn’t pleasant for anybody. The condom might even make it past the treatment plant. This is not good because it means that it could end up in the water supply, and the last thing we need is more pollution in our rivers, lakes, and oceans.
Not all condoms are made equally. Most condoms are made of latex, which means that they will biodegrade. Latex, however, does not biodegrade when it is under water, which is why it is not good to flush your used condoms. Condoms are not entirely made of latex, however, and the other things on condoms (spermicide, lubricant) might affect the biodegradability. The best option seems to be to send them to a landfill and see how they pass the test of time.

Regardless of what material of condom you use (latex, polyurethane, or lambskin), you are going to have a wrapper to dispose of. These foil wrappers will not biodegrade, nor can they be recycled. This simply has to be put in the garbage.
Even if your latex or lambskin condoms are biodegradable, it is best not to try to compost or bury your condoms. Animals will smell the human scent and try to dig up what you have buried. This means that there will be unsightly used condoms around. Burying your condom is tantamount to littering: and there are better ways to deal with your condoms available.
So, in the end, what is the best way to dispose of your condoms? The best thing is to wrap it in a bit of toilet paper or paper towel (or any other biodegradable material: think paper bases such as paper bags) and then to put it in the garbage. Don’t wrap your condom up in plastic, as then it certainly won’t biodegrade. The good news is that the semen and vaginal fluid on the condom certainly will biodegrade, and might facilitate the condom biodegrading.
And lastly, remember…never reuse a condom. Although reduce, reuse, and recycle is the motto for environmentalism, you need to put your health first on this one. Shop around: Use lubricated latex condoms. Always use latex, because lambskin condoms don't block HIV and STDs, and polyurethane condoms break more often than latex. Shop around and find your favorite brand. Try different sizes and shapes (yes, they come in different sizes and shapes!). There are a lot of choices--one will work for you.

Keep it fresh: Store condoms loosely in a cool, dry place (not your wallet). Make sure your condoms are fresh--check the expiration date. Throw away condoms that have expired, been very hot, or been washed in the washer. If you think the condom might not be good, get a new one. You and your partner are worth it.
*

Take it easy: Open the package carefully, so that you don't rip the condom. Be careful if you use your teeth. Make sure that the condom package has not been punctured (there should be a pocket of air). Check the condom for damaged packaging and signs of aging such as brittleness, stickiness, and discoloration.
*

Keep it hard: Put on the condom after the penis is erect and before it touches any part of a partner's body. If a penis is uncircumcised (uncut), the foreskin must be pulled back before putting on the condom.

Heads up! Make sure the condom is right-side out. It's like a sock--there's a right side and a wrong side. Products such as petroleum jelly, massage oils, butter, Crisco, Vaseline, and hand creams are not considered water-soluble lubricants and should not be used.

Slippery when wet--part 2: Put lubricant on after you put on the condom, not before--it could slip off. Add more lube often. Dry condoms break more easily.

Come and go...: Withdraw the penis immediately after ejaculation, while the penis is still erect; grasp the rim of the condom between your fingers and slowly withdraw the penis (with the condom still on) so that no semen is spilled.
*

Clean up: Throw out the used condom right away. Tie it off to prevent spillage or wrap it in bathroom tissue and put it in the garbage. Condoms can clog toilets. Use a condom only once. Never use the same condom for vaginal and anal intercourse. Never use a condom that has been used by someone else.

Do you have to use a condom for oral sex?

It is possible for oral sex to transmit HIV, whether the infected partner is performing or receiving oral sex. But the risk is low compared with unprotected vaginal or anal sex.

If you choose to perform oral sex, and your partner is male,

use a latex condom on the penis; or
*

if you or your partner is allergic to latex, plastic (polyurethane) condoms can be used.

If you choose to have oral sex, and your partner is female,

use a latex barrier (such as a natural rubber latex sheet, a dental dam, or a cut-open condom that makes a square) between your mouth and the vagina. A latex barrier such as a dental dam reduces the risk of blood or vaginal fluids entering your mouth. Plastic food wrap also can be used as a barrier.

If you choose to perform oral sex with either a male or female partner and this sex includes oral contact with your partner's anus (anilingus or rimming),

use a latex barrier (such as a natural rubber latex sheet, a dental dam, or a cut-open condom that makes a square) between your mouth and the anus. Plastic food wrap also can be used as a barrier. This barrier is to prevent getting another sexually transmitted disease or parasites, not HIV.

If you choose to share sex toys, such as dildos or vibrators, with your partner,

Female condom

Most people have never heard of these, but they may be helpful for you. The female condom is a large condom made of polyurethane fitted with larger and smaller rings at each end that help keep it inside the vagina. They may seem a little awkward at first, but can be an alternative to the male condom. They are made of polyurethane, so any lubricant can be used without damaging them. Female condoms generally cost more than male condoms, and if you aren't used to them, you'll definitely need to practice.

Store the condom in a cool dry place, not in direct heat or sunlight.

Throw away any condoms that have expired--the date is printed on individual condom wrappers.

Dental dams and plastic wrap

Even though oral sex is a low-risk sexual practice, you may want to use protection when performing oral sex on someone who has HIV.

Dental dams are small squares of latex that were made originally for use in dental procedures. They are now commonly used as barriers when performing oral sex on women, to keep in vaginal fluids or menstrual blood that could transmit HIV or other STDs.

Like condoms, it appears that, although not designed for the purpose, female condoms do work as an effective barrier during anal sex. A study in the United States of 14 male couples using the equivalent of the female condoms found that, although no leaks or tears were found in any of the sheaths used, all of the men found design and usage difficulties, 'which were primarily due to lack of experience and knowledge' of the product.

Provisional guidelines for anal sex with female condoms

* 1 - The easiest way to use the female condom for anal sex is to wear it like a `male' (penile) condom. Put lubricant in the female condom and then place it over the penis (or a dildo). Use plenty of lubricant on the outside of the female condom or around your partner's arsehole before fucking

* 2 - Alternatively, you could try to insert the female condom in the rectum first, as for vaginal fucking. Use plenty of lubricant around the arsehole, and loosen it with a finger in readiness for the female condom. Make sure your fingernails are cut short

* 3 - After removing the female condom from its wrapper, hold the inner ring between your thumb, index and forefinger, and squeeze it so that it forms an oval. Don't remove the inner ring, as this will lead the female condom to become tangled, and could lead to breakage

* 4 - Push the female condom up into your rectum as far as you can, using the inner ring as a guide, whilst spreading your arsehole with your other hand. You may find this easier if you raise one leg onto the side of the bath, or a stool

* 5 - Then put your index finger inside the female condom, until you feel the bottom of the inner ring. Push up as far as you can, but do not insert the outer ring

* 6 - You will find that the outer ring, and perhaps a small part of the female condom, are on the outside of your arsehole. That's meant to happen, and should stop the female condom from slipping inside

* 7 - Use more lubricant inside the female condom, to keep it moist, and add it whenever you need it during fucking

* 8 - Check every now and again during fucking that the outer ring of the female condom hasn't slipped inside your arsehole, or that his penis hasn't slipped between the female condom and your arsehole. If it has, stop, remove the female condom, and use a new one before starting again

* 9 - Don't re–use the female condom. Some gay men are reported to have used a female condom as a semi–permanent barrier to HIV, being fucked by multiple partners. The female condom is designed for vaginal sex and for single use. If you use it more than once for anal sex, we don't know the strains that it could put on the sides of the sheath, which might easily tear. And if you get a lot of semen in the female condom, we don't know how effective it is in holding it in, or whether any seepage into your rectum could take place. It is likely that fucking in somebody else's cum would also be dangerous for your partners

* 10 - Removing the female condom. Because the female condom lines the inside of the rectum, your partner doesn't have to withdraw immediately after coming. You can remove the sheath when it suits you, making sure that no semen is spilt. Twist the outer ring to keep the semen inside, then pull gently. Throw away the used female condom.

Gay men's use of female condoms
Female condoms were the first product developed to offer women more control over HIV prevention methods. The Reality condom was approved in the USA in 1992 for vaginal contraceptive use. Latex male condoms have been associated with usage problems including, breakage, slippage, latex allergies and lack of control by receptive partners. Although female condoms are essentially not designed for the purpose, some gay men have used them and it seems they do provide an effective barrier during anal sex.

Research published in the March 2003 edition of the journal AIDS has assessed the safety and acceptability of a brand of female condom called Reality for anal sex among gay men. The study enrolled 56 monogamous seroconcordant gay male couples who had not used condoms in the past three months were randomised to use latex male condoms or the Reality female condom for anal sex. On study entry the men were given 10 Reality or lubricated male condoms to use with lubricant during the following six weeks. In the second six weeks the couples crossed over and began using the other condom type.

The Reality condom has two polyurethane rings and a thin, loose-fitting polyurethane sheath which in laboratory studies has been shown to be impermeable to viruses and less likely to rupture than latex condoms. In this study couples were advised to remove the inner ring to reduce potential rectal trauma and bleeding.

Receptive partners were more likely to report pain or discomfort with the Reality rather than the male condom. Both partners were significantly more likely to report RealityTM condom slippage during use or withdrawal. Rates of condom breakage were similar for Reality and male condoms.

After using both sets of condoms , both active and passive partners were significantly less likely to be willing to use Reality condoms in the future with partners of unknown HIV than they were to be willing to use male latex condoms; (21% of receptive and 26% of insertive partners would be willing to use Reality condoms, compared to 61% of both receptive and insertive partners who were willing to use latex condoms. The main reason reported by those who would be willing to use the Reality condom with future partners of unknown HIV status were that the Reality condom was more comfortable, easier to use, and perceived to be stronger and safer.

The researchers suggested that gay men who are considering using the Reality condom might require training relating to slippage and methods for avoiding semen spillage that might expose the anal mucosa. They added "further work is warranted on design modifications, safety and acceptability of the Reality condom in HIV-negative gay men".

It seemed to her daughter that if she continued to obey her parents in abstinence from sex before marriage, she would continue to be the brunt of the school jokes!
At eleven the trauma of concern for how her school mates made fun of her for remaining a virgin at eleven, was taking a toll on her grades, going from A's to C average in one semester.
The wisdom of these parents to recognize and act, was the only hope for this particular public school student.
In a setting where we have permitted the authority of the Word of God to be removed from any public display and dominance, it is most definitely worth considering whether the education we choose to give our children is one that is in agreement with our own personal beliefs. We do have a choice!
Home schooling is not for everyone, but it is definitely a viable option to public formal education.
When you find yourself feeling as though it is not worth the battle, as everyone you see your children hanging 'round with, has substandard behavior and values, it might just be time for a drastic change to rescue your child from the most often inevitable path of sex before marriage!
It is worth the battle, for our children's foundational beliefs to be embedded and supported by you. If you believe that God has rules and laws in place for us to obey, then you will understand that if we do not stand up for what we believe is right, our children will fall prey to the beliefs of the masses, and choose to follow what is easy and acceptable to those masses, or peers.
I believe God gave rules for us to follow, for our benefit. He knows that we are a foolish generation of people, He gave us these rules to protect us from the consequences of our behavior, one example of these consequences, being sexually transmitted diseases.
When you home school your child, you are the one who sets the standards by which they will experience education about sexual activities and beliefs. You are accountable to a Holy God who does inform us, that there is a time for everything and that time for sex is after marriage has taken place.
If you have not considered home schooling, now might be a perfect time to consider it. If you find yourself saying such things as, "I cannot believe my friend buys her 13 year old condoms", you had better step up and pay attention, through her child, she may just be providing your 13 year old condoms as well!

The recent campaign by the Ministry of Health in Jamaica with the tagline 'Pinch, leave an inch, roll' has come under fire from certain sectors of the society. Esther Tyson, principal of Ardenne High School in Kingston, Jamaica wrote an article in the Sunday Gleaner condemning the campaign calling for serious adjustments to the message. Her new tagline for the campaign would state 'value self, value others; self-control and true love waits.'

We live in a society that is over sexualised with not only images but also heavily present in our music. The fact remains that our young people are having unprotected sex and the Ministry of Health recognizes this. Any campaign that is geared towards educating and influencing the use of condoms with the youth must be embraced. The youth globally not only unique in Jamaica are faced with choices daily and most times the values we would ideally want our youth to accept are ignored upon. Societies today are not projecting the conservative values we are told of. Instead, young individuals are bombarded with the acceptable behaviours of promiscuity and unsafe sexual habits.

The Jamaican society has been characterized as a Christian one. However, one would think the church would be vocal on certain issues but on the contrast they are numb and quiet leaving a sector of society to be leaders teaching our children that unprotected sex is real love. Our youth today has taken that message as gospel preaching it to those who they come in contact with, developing a culture where we have accepted sexual activities among young individuals as a norm.

How do we now combat this problem? The advertising campaign suggested by Esther Tyson to promote value self cannot work. Young individuals are battling low self-esteems, no confidence within themselves and a society where they are searching for role models. Valuing Others? Jamaica is currently one of the murder capitals of the world. We have no respect for life or anyone's life in this country. True love? If a research should be conducted I am positive the percentage would be high of children born out of wedlock. Therefore the campaign that Tyson suggests is nonsensical, and cannot work in this society. The fact is, the campaign suggested by Tyson would be looked down upon and revamped to change its message simply because it would not be current.

The Ministry of Health's campaign was spot on. Recognizing that young people today are participating in activities like this, arming them with the correct information can only assist. The campaign teamed up with popular show Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall and it was a perfect match because the target audience were fans of the popular show.

It is a pity that Tyson reminds me of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin as a conservative believes that sex should be solely between married couples. However, Palin's daughter Bristol Palin got pregnant at only 17 years of age. Sarah Palin as a republican politician has been preaching for all her political life of the sacredness of sex and marriage; when in her own household her daughter was ignoring this message. Esther Tyson serves as principal of Ardenne High School, a top school in Kingston, Jamaica. One would think she would have on the ground experience of what is happening to our youth today. However, Tyson still chants from her high seat that the campaign should be 'value self, value others; self-control and true love waits.' One thing is for sure, her students are chanting a different message of 'Pinch, leave an inch, roll.'

It is time we accept the world we live in presently and start accepting the truth. We live in a society where sorry to say sexual promiscuity is a current trend which is very attractive to our young people. We need more innovative campaigns that will challenge stats quo and be different. After all we are in 2009 and not the 1960's.

In 1986 I was asked by a, new to Oregon, resident why I home schooled, I explained that everything I believed in, appeared to be contrary to the teaching at the public school. At the time, we were in the public library and our conversation had commenced over her comment about how well our children go along with their siblings. In explanation of our beliefs, the fact that we home schooled came up and she expressed her concern about her eleven year old daughter who was the main reason for the family moving to Oregon from California. It seemed to her daughter that if she continued to obey her parents in abstinence from sex before marriage, she would continue to be the brunt of the school jokes!

At eleven the trauma of concern for how her school mates made fun of her for remaining a virgin at eleven, was taking a toll on her grades, going from A's to C average in one semester.

The wisdom of these parents to recognize and act, was the only hope for this particular public school student.

In a setting where we have permitted the authority of the Word of God to be removed from any public display and dominance, it is most definitely worth considering whether the education we choose to give our children is one that is in agreement with our own personal beliefs. We do have a choice!

Home schooling is not for everyone, but it is definitely a viable option to public formal education.

When you find yourself feeling as though it is not worth the battle, as everyone you see your children hanging 'round with, has substandard behavior and values, it might just be time for a drastic change to rescue your child from the most often inevitable path of sex before marriage!

It is worth the battle, for our children's foundational beliefs to be embedded and supported by you. If you believe that God has rules and laws in place for us to obey, then you will understand that if we do not stand up for what we believe is right, our children will fall prey to the beliefs of the masses, and choose to follow what is easy and acceptable to those masses, or peers.

I believe God gave rules for us to follow, for our benefit. He knows that we are a foolish generation of people, He gave us these rules to protect us from the consequences of our behavior, one example of these consequences, being sexually transmitted diseases.

When you home school your child, you are the one who sets the standards by which they will experience education about sexual activities and beliefs. You are accountable to a Holy God who does inform us, that there is a time for everything and that time for sex is after marriage has taken place.

If you have not considered home schooling, now might be a perfect time to consider it. If you find yourself saying such things as, "I cannot believe my friend buys her 13 year old condoms", you had better step up and pay attention, through her child, she may just be providing your 13 year old condoms as well!

So you are smart enough to practice safe sex (preventing both pregnancy and STDs) by properly using a condom. But what do you do with the condom when you are done with it? Here are some hints on environmentally-friendly condom disposal.

Firstly, don’t flush your condoms, ever! Flushing condoms is not the way to deal with them. Condoms can clog the plumbing in your house (or the plumbing wherever you happen to be). This can be an expensive and embarrassing situation. If the condom manages to make it through your septic system, it will only end up with the solid waste. This means that somebody has to pull it out of the sewage treatment, which isn’t pleasant for anybody. The condom might even make it past the treatment plant. This is not good because it means that it could end up in the water supply, and the last thing we need is more pollution in our rivers, lakes, and oceans.
Not all condoms are made equally. Most condoms are made of latex, which means that they will biodegrade. This option is only viable for people in monogamous relationships who have been tested for sexually transmitted diseases. If this is the case, you could consider an even more environmentally friendly barrier form of birth control such as a diaphragm, cervical cap, or shield. Ask your doctor what is best for you.
Regardless of what material of condom you use (latex, polyurethane, or lambskin), you are going to have a wrapper to dispose of. These foil wrappers will not biodegrade, nor can they be recycled. This simply has to be put in the garbage.
Even if your latex or lambskin condoms are biodegradable, it is best not to try to compost or bury your condoms. Animals will smell the human scent and try to dig up what you have buried. This means that there will be unsightly used condoms around. Burying your condom is tantamount to littering: and there are better ways to deal with your condoms available.
So, in the end, what is the best way to dispose of your condoms? The best thing is to wrap it in a bit of toilet paper or paper towel (or any other biodegradable material: think paper bases such as paper bags) and then to put it in the garbage. Condom Donation by Thailand Reflects Their Own Fight Against HIV/AIDS

For almost 20 years, Thailand has been the focus of an intensive effort to stop the spread of HIV/Aids among the population of approximately 65 million.
A survey in 1988 found that 44% of sex workers in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand were already infected with HIV. But it was not until 1991 that the government got serious in its efforts to curb the spread of the infection.
Eventually greatly increased budgets led to a massive public information campaign on the dangers of AIDS. The government also introduced a "100 percent condom program" in which condoms were distributed free to brothels and massage parlours, and sex workers were required to use them. Brothels that did not comply were closed.
As a result of these and other programs, the number of new HIV infections was reduced from 140,000 in 1991 to 21,000 in 2003. Still, 1% of the 65 million people in Thailand are infected with HIV, and AIDS has become the leading cause of death.
It is projected that more than 50,000 Thais will die each year from Aids-related causes, at least until the end of 2006. More than 90% of these deaths will be young people aged 20-44.
So although a concerted effort has been made to stem the tide of HIV infection in Thailand, the success rate has only been moderate. And little has been done to stop infection amongst injecting drug users (IDUs) who share needles.
Most new infections still start with sex trade workers or IDUs and within two years are passed on to spouses.
Thailand to donate 50,000 condoms to Africa
In a move consistent with their own moderate success at fighting HIV/AIDS with condoms, the Thai government announced they were donating 50,000 condoms to seven African countries as part of their "forward engagement" program to help with the UN effort to fight HIV/Aids in Africa.
The condoms will be provided by Thailand's foreign and health ministries and shipped by the United Nations Development Programme to Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Gabon, Mali, Nigeria and Uganda.
Sub-Saharan Africa is the most heavily infected area in the world. An estimated 25.8 million people had been infected by HIV at the end of 2005 and approximately 3.1 million new infections occurred during last year.
Apart from abstaining from sexual contact altogether, the use of condoms is the only effective means to help prevent the spread of HIV/Aids and other sexually transmitted diseases.
Donation of condoms condemned by Nigerian Archbishop
In an announcement that underscores the debate taking place in many countries over tactics being used to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS, a leading Thai Catholic Archbishop voiced strong opposition to ongoing distribution of condoms.
In spite of its endorsement by the U.N. the condom donation annouced by the Thai government has been vigorously condemned by Nigerian Archbishop Anthony Cardinal Okogie. He described the move as immoral and quite likely to promote irresponsible sex and promiscuity.
In a press release he said, "Do they know the effect of the production to the youths and the nation? The government should fight poverty, hunger, sicknesses, diseases, and the lack of social amenities plaguing the nation, instead of fighting AIDS with condom production," he stated.
He also opposed any NACA (National Action Committee on Aids) Bill before the Nigerian National Assembly that included manufacturing of condoms in Nigeria, saying; "it will encourage immorality, sex on demand, promiscuity, irresponsibility and prostitution. Condom, knowingly and intentionally, offends the ends of marriage, which is procreation and says no to the bearing of children but promiscuity.
"It is unfortunate that while other embassies are promoting trade, bilateral relations, we are encouraging cheap money and cheap production of condoms to encourage our youths on immorality."

Study Shows Birth Control Pills May Have Long Term Effects

A study published in January, 2006 in the Journal of Sexual Medicine claims that women who use birth control pills may suffer from long term side effects. Possible side effects include decreased desire and arousal, decreased lubrication, and increased sex-related pain.
Researchers studied a group of 124 women, all of whom had previously suffered from some degree of sexual dysfunction. 69 of the women continued using the pill, 39 were discontinued users, and 23 had never used it.
The research team analysed blood samples taken from women who had discontinued use of the pill six months earlier, and found that they had significantly less available testosterone. This would make them more prone to suffer from side effects such as decreased sexual desire and less frequent arousal.
Increased globulin levels means less testosterone
According to study leader Dr. Claudia Panzer of Boston University, the women who were currently taking the pill had as much as four times the level of testosterone-binding globulin in their blood as those not taking the pill. This is what reduces the amount of testosterone the body has at its disposal.
But the study found that after six months of not taking the pill, globulin levels were still roughly twice as high in those who had taken the pill, compared to those who had not. And eleven women who were tested after more than 11 months still reported having almost twice the globulin level as the group that had not taken the pill.
These observations were surprising, the authors said, "as the effect of oral contraceptives on sex hormone-binding globulin levels should have subsided." The findings are even more interesting, the study noted, because these women also received transdermal testosterone therapy, which should have decreased sex hormone-binding globulin levels.
All patients were offered a transdermal testosterone gel to improve their sexual function, but even with this therapy globulin levels were much higher than in those who had not taken the pill.
The report noted that earlier research has shown that increases in sex hormone-binding globulin levels from using birth control pills result in a 40% to 60% decrease in free testosterone levels.
Long term impact
The researchers speculated that the synthetic estrogens in oral contraceptives may trigger more permanent changes in the way the genes function, leading to much longer lasting reductions in the amounts of testosterone available to the body.
So a therapy meant to enhance sexual experience may actually make it less enjoyable for many women.
The researchers were unwilling to draw hard and fast conclusions, saying only that more research is needed. The most important question left hanging is "whether sex hormone-binding globulin changes induced by oral contraceptives may or may not be completely reversible after discontinuation of oral contraceptive use and whether this leads to long-term sexual, metabolic, and mental health changes in women."
At a bare minimum, doctors should make women more aware of these possible side effects, and they should be more diligent about watching for them. They should also be less eager to opt for the easy answer, and be more open to less invasive methods of birth control such as condoms.

When determining condom effectiveness, it is important to recognize that, as with all methods of contraception,
the effectivness of condoms decreases when they are not used correctly. According to one large study, "In one year, only two of every 100 couples who use condoms consistently and correctly will experience an unintended pregnancy - two pregnancies arising from an estimated 8,300 acts of sexual intercourse, for a 0.02 percent per-condom pregnancy rate."
Other studies that do not measure for incorrect use, but only for "regular use", indicate that the pregnancy rate may be as high as 15% of couples. But this number is skewed because it includes improper use. The main reason that condoms sometimes fail to prevent pregnancy is incorrect or inconsistent use, not the failure of the condom itself.
These studies just ask women how often they have become pregnant when their partners use condoms. But the "failure rate" derived from these statistics includes cases of incorrect usage, tearing due to mishandling of the condom or rough sexual practices, or even where the couple did not use a condom every time they had sex.
So it is worth repeating. When condoms are used consistently and correctly they have a very high prevention rate -- between 97% and 99%. But they must be used "consistently and correctly" in order to be this effective.
Ways to Prevent Condom "Failure"
Here is what you must do to insure you are getting the best protection possible from condoms:
Use a condom every time you have sex.
The condom must be applied as soon as erection occurs and before any sexual contact (vaginal, anal or oral).
Be sure not to tear the condom with teeth or fingernails.
Do not use oil-based lubricants such as petroleum jelly (vaseline), cold cream, hand lotion or baby oil, since it can weaken the latex.
Withdraw from the partner immediately after ejaculation, holding the condom firmly to keep it from slipping off.
Some other Condom Considerations
When you buy condoms, read the label. Tests have shown that latex condoms are more likely to give you the added side benefit of preventing the passage of STDs. High quality condoms will be in a package that says the condoms are effective in preventing disease. If the package doesn't say anything about preventing disease, the condoms may not provide the protection you want, even though they may be the most expensive ones you can buy.
Novelty condoms (flavored, textured, etc.) are intended primarily for sexual stimulation, not protection. Again, read the label.
